The Belarusian State Committee on the Press has issued an official warning to the Brest-based private weekly Brestsky Kuryer for an article about the coordinating council "Regional Belarus," which is not registered with the justice authorities. Regional Belarus is led by Semyon Domash, one of the potential single candidates from the united opposition in this year's presidential election. Belarus' media law bars newspapers from publishing information signed by unregistered organizations. The newspaper intends to contest the warning in court, Nikolai Aleksandrov, Brestsky Kuryer editor-in-chief, told BelaPAN on Wednesday. Brestsky Kuryer has received two warnings in 2001. The first one was issued for its failure to promptly inform the authorities about its new legal address. Two warnings in one year allow the State Press Committee to initiate court proceedings for closing down the publication.
