A judge in Brest on December 21 convicted a local medical school director, Viktor Sokolov, of taking bribes and sentenced him to three years in a labor camp and forfeiture of property. Galina Mikhailova, a departmental chief at the same school, was sentenced to four years and forfeiture of property. The two were arrested in August on a charge of having taken a total of $2,400 in bribes from applicants during the 2000 entrance exams. On one occasion in May, Ms. Mikhailova reportedly accepted $600 from an applicant for admission to the school, kept $200 and gave the remaining $400 to her boss.
