The government plans to spend 5.3 billion rubels ($2.5 million) this year for the development of the infrastructure of the Free Economic Zone (FEZ) "Brest." The authorities will provide public funds for the construction of roads, electricity supply lines and utility facilities in a 340-hectare area near the city's airport that had remained idle for a long time because of its poor infrastructure, Nikolai Krivetsky, head of the zone's administration, told BelaPAN. According to him, the situation changed for the better in 2003, when 6.7 billion rubels was spent on the infrastructure. The official expressed confidence that the expenses would soon pay off. Ten resident companies currently construct their factories in the area, he said. According to Mr. Krivetsky, every US dollar spent by the government on the FEZ since its establishment has yielded $7.3 in return.
